The 10th annual Kwanzaa celebration at Sankofa Cultural Arts Center took place on Dec. 28. The sold-out event featured Chicago TV personality Garrard McClendon as the night’s emcee. Featured speaker was Che “Rhymefest’ Smith.
The Kwanzaa event included Sankofa’s annual community awards ceremony. Among the winners was 15th District Off. Tonya Collins, who received the Dolores McCain Community Service Award, named after the late Delores McCain, Austin Weekly News’ former “Mother” and reporter.
