A North Lawndale teacher has won the Golden Apple Award this year for his exceptional work in the classroom.

Luke Albrecht, who teaches at Crown Community Fines Arts Academy, 2128 S, Saint Louis, was surprised in his classroom Wednesday morning by officials with the Golden Apple Foundation.

Golden Apple’s are given to Chicago-area teachers for their outstanding contributions to the classroom.

Crown Principal Lee Jackson said Wednesday afternoon that his school is thrilled about Albrecht’s accomplishment. Ten Chicago-area teachers are Golden Apple winners this year and will be receiving surprise classroom visits this week. The awards have been handed out since 1986.

Recipients receive a tuition-free sabbatical to study at Northwestern University and a $3,000 cash award. The last West Side Golden Apple winner was Austin’s Monique Blakes of DePriest Elementary School in 2012.

Austin teacher Rosalind Kline-Thomas of Michele Clark Academy won the award in 2010. The school also had two Golden Apple winners in 2008, Donnell White and Ms. Samina Khan.

Austin Weekly News will have more coverage about Albrecht’s win at AustinWeeklyNews.com and in next week’s paper.
