For just $5 a year, low-income Chicagoans can now ride the city’s Divvy bikes.
That’s a big break on the annual membership, which costs $75.
The city announced the “D4E” (Divvy for Everyone) program last week,according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The special membership are available for the next year; the city hopes to look for ways to continue the $5 memberships beyond that, according to the Chicago Tribune.
But it’s still not clear when Chicago’s bike-sharing program will expand to the West Side. Since Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched Divvy in the central part of the city in June 2013 some Austin residents have wondered when the city’s most-populated community area will be included.
Earlier this year, Divvy expanded to 476 stations with 4,760 bikes covering 87 square miles from Touhy Avenue south to 75th Street, and as far west as Pulaski Road.
Income eligibility for the new $5 membership ranges from $35,310 for singles up to $97,710 for a family of six for No credit card or debit card will be required.
