The Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club will host a screening and panel discussion of the Oscar-nominated film, “Judas and the Black Messiah,” on Sunday, March 21.

The screening will take place at the AMC Dine-In Yorktown 18, 80 Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard. Showtime is 3:30 p.m.

Afterward, a panel discussion will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood.

The panel discussion will feature Fred Hampton Jr., the son of Fred Hampton and chairman of the Black Panther Party Cubs; Daniel Kaluuya, the actor who was nominated for an Oscar for playing Fred Hampton in the film; Ryan Coogler, the film’s Oscar-nominated director; Dominique Fishback, the actress who plays Fred Hampton’s girlfriend in the movie; Charles King and Shaka King, the film’s co-producers; and Mother Akua Njeri (formerly known as Deborah Johnson), who is the mother of Fred Hampton Jr.

Fred Hampton Jr. will be the only panelist on stage alongside the moderators: Anthony Clark, Sydney Jackson and Dominique Jeter. The other panelists will attend virtually.

Fred Hampton was a native of Maywood and his late brother, Bill Hampton, was a longtime member of the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club.

There is a maximum of 50 people who will be allowed into the school’s auditorium for the discussion. The school is waiting to hear from the State of Illinois to see if the club can increase the 50-person limit.

The discussion will be broadcast via Zoom and Facebook Live on the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club’s Facebook page, which you can access here.
