A Chicago firefighter died Wednesday from injuries he suffered battling a morning blaze on the West Side.
Captain David Meyer had been with the fire department since 1996, department spokesman Larry Langford wrote on Twitter. He is survived by his wife, daughters and a son.
About 4 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire in a garage in the 1200 block of North Pine Avenue, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
Meyer was critically injured when the garage roof collapsed on him, according to the Sun-Times.
Meyer was hospitalized in critical condition before being pronounced dead, officials said.
The fire was put out within 15 minutes and only required a low-level response, Merritt said. The cause of the fire was unknown.
Chicago firefighters gathered outside Stroger Hospital’s emergency room Wednesday as they awaited Meyer’s procession from the hospital. Meyer’s family was seen being escorted from the hospital by fire department officials. Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the assembly.
